OPERATION ENCOMPASS
In accordance with the Police and Crime Commissioner Vera Baird’s Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy, Operation Encompass has been initiated in Northumbria Police to promote the value of early interventions in schools.
In Gateshead, Operation Encompass is part of the wider Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) that has recently been established within Gateshead Council to support vulnerable persons.
The process commenced on 01 April 2015 and all eighty seven schools in Gateshead are participating in Operation Encompass. The process is to be rolled out to the rest of the Northumbria Police area very soon.
All School Key Adults have undertaken Operation Encompass training and are extremely positive about this exchange of information which is assisting them greatly in providing tailored support to children, young people and their families. One Key Adult Commented “I must say I think that this is a great operation as it keeps us well informed and it gives me a great understanding of the children and families I work with.”
Detective Constable Gill Menzies was asked to implement Operation Encompass across Gateshead, in conjunction with Gateshead Council Safer Communities. DC Menzies says “We are improving the way we share information every day and this is a simple yet effective example of how that information can greatly help in ensuring the continued welfare of children and young people.”

Positional language
In Maths we have been looking at different positions in relation to different objects. We used the language ‘left, right, above, below, under, on top of, next to, in front of and behind’. We worked in partners to challenge each other to find different positions in the...
Tasting foods
We tasted different foods without being able to see them and guessed what the foods were. We then found out what they were and discussed whether they were salty, sweet, bitter, sour or umami. Some foods were tastier than others!
Families
We have started learning about different types of families in the world. We discussed what our families at home are like and how they compared to how other people may live. We worked together to find a family of different animals at the start without talking to each...
Mystery Reader
We enjoyed welcoming a mystery reader into our class today, listening to how all the different crayons felt on how much they were used when someone colours. We loved guessing who it might be and then listening to the story. Thank you!

Beat 1 Tag
We played Beat 1 Tag in Music today, moving only on the first beat of 4 around the room to tag each other. It took us a bit of practice but we really enjoyed it and we’re counting in 4 to the music together.
Branching Databases
The children have been learning how to create branching databases in computing and they have spotted them in other subjects too like science when they have been identifying rocks.
Investigating light
The children were investigating how reflective the surface of materials were. They thought about the properties of those materials and what made them reflective. They recorded their observations on a table and were surprised with some of their results.
